Worship Service – October 9, 2022

Guest Pastor: Dr. Alan Hickok

As we hear the story of the call of Jonah, make us ready to follow Jesus on whatever path he leads us.  Cast aside our fears and doubts, and teach us to trust wholly in you.   Come, let us worship God!

Scripture :   Jonah 2:1-10

1 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. He said: “In my distress I called to the Lord,    and he answered me.  From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help,   and you listened to my cry.
You hurled me into the depths,  into the very heart of the seas,  and the currents swirled about me;  all your waves and breakers swept over me.I said, ‘I have been banished from your sight;  yet I will look again
toward your holy temple.’  The engulfing waters threatened me,  the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head.To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever.
But you, Lord my God, brought my life up from the pit.“When my life was ebbing away,  I remembered you, Lord, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple.“Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for them.
But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to you.  What I have vowed I will make good.    I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord.’”  10 And the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

Call to Worship:

L:  God called to Jonah to get up, go to Nineveh and proclaim God’s word.  But Jonah refused, until God called a second time.

P:  God is persistent.  God believes in those whom God has called.

L:  Jesus called the disciples by the lakeshore.  They left their families and jobs to follow Jesus.

P:  Lord, give us the courage to follow you all our lives.

Prayer of Confession:  Heavenly Father, what an example Jonah is to all of us.  Thank You that even when we are faithless, You remain faithful.  But I pray that I would be ready and willing to hear and obey Your call on my life, no matter how difficult or unusual it may be.  Use me, I pray, to share the good news of salvation so that many who are dead in their sins may come to know Christ as Savior and Lord – to Your greater praise and glory.  In Jesus’ name I pray, AMEN.

Message:     “Choices and Consequences”

God be with you ‘til we meet again, By His counsels guide, up-hold you, With His sheep securely fold you: God be with you ‘til we meet again.
