The Messenger – June 2013

From the Pastor’s Desk

“Let the parents bequeath to their children not riches, but the spirit of reverence.”

                                                                                                                        Plato

I wish I were braver!  So many things seem to be snatched out of our hands any more.  I know we should not be the SILENT MAJORITY, but somehow I seem to wish someone else would take on the tough work.

I guess I don’t like it when people are picketing and shoving signs in other people’s faces when I don’t agree with their cause.  So, I hesitate to use their means of getting attention.

I was heartbroken over and over again this past year as children were slain and movie goers couldn’t enjoy a night out. I was horrified when people can’t even watch a marathon race without losing family, friends, and even parts of their own body.

I was disappointed in the outcome of congress’ action about guns.  How could they have walked down the hall, looked into the faces of parents who had lost heir children and voted to keep the status quo?

This month, we celebrate Father’s Day and I want every father to be able to watch their children graduate, marry and be there for their own children.

I’m not sure exactly how we can be braver, but I know we must!  We can start at home and teach our children and grandchildren the value of everyone’s life.  We can teach them that there will always be people who are different than we are and we need to respect their differences.  We must help them to understand that we must be faithful in our beliefs and as much as we are able to stand behind those beliefs without hurting someone else in the process.

We need to write letters or Emails or tweet or whatever we can to make sure our standards are heard by those in power.  I want to know what has happened to my rights.  I want my voice and the ones I love to be heard.

I had a father who wanted us to have a better world than he had.  He had to quit school to work and help support his family.  He wanted us to have our education.

On the day he died, his last words to me were, “I will be better when I get up there!”  His hard life was over, his pain was gone and his new life awaited him.  But, don’t we owe it to our children, to make sure that while we live on this earth, they are loved and we can have reverence for everyone’s life?

BE  AWARE

  •  We should recognize God’s work in both the extraordinary and ordinary events of life -
  • and give God the praise.
  • We should “listen to our lives” to see ways in which we perceive God’s work to be producing “wonder” in us!
  • The greatest miracle of all is God’s sending Jesus Christ into the world to give us “life” and “light” (John 1:4)

On September 8, 2013 the Franklin Hill Presbyterian Church will be celebrating it’s 200th Anniversary. The day will be full of events to celebrate this momentous occasion. We will begin with the normal morning church service. A period of time to reminisce is planned before lunch. A Chicken Bar B Cue is planned for lunch with more time for sharing. The Celebration Service will be at 2:00 which will include previous pastors taking part and lots of special music.  Desert following that service will be an old fashion ice cream social with home made ice cream and cake.  Please mark your calendars and plan to join us for the day or any portion of it.

The Float Committee has been working hard on ideas and now construction has begun for the 4th of July Parade in Montrose, in celebration of our 200th Anniversary.  We will be having two floats in the parade.  One float will have a replica building of of church, which is now built and being painted.  A bell will also be on this float and will be rung as we go through the parade.  The second float will be a simulation of the inside of our church with music and singing.  We will be handing out bottled water and candy.  We need volunteers to sing on the music float. There is a sign up sheet in the foyer, or  see Pastor Joe Travis.    Any questions, see Ken Post, Joyce Coons or Carolyn White.
