The Messenger – August 2013

From the Pastor’s Desk

“You gave me life and showed me kindness, and in your providence watched over my spirit.”

– Job 10:12

At a retreat, one time, the leader asked us to do an exercise. He said, “Write down what you would like printed on your tomb stone. I wrote down, “I tried!“

It is probably a good idea for us to take stock of our life once in a while. What would we like to be remembered for? I wouldn’t want to be remembered for the days when I lost my patience or the one-day when I swore twice because the snow blower wouldn’t start.

I read a book once that told some quotes that people made about famous persons before they were famous. I remember one about Fred Astaire, “He sings a little, dances a little but is not much of a showman,” said by a director. If you are old enough, you will remember how famous he became with his dancing and singing.

Someone wrote about Billy Graham, “He stutters and doesn‘t have much to say.“ How he has changed the world as he went from country to country telling the Good News.

I’d like to be remembered for bringing joy into people’s lives. I would hope I would have opened some thoughts for loving our Lord and Savior. But most of all I would like to be remembered as a Child of God.

It’s hard when we are so busy to remember that people are watching us all the time. In their pain, they want to see how we handle ourselves – how those times of trouble affect us and how we respond to life’s problems.

When you come to a place that would drag you down into the depths of self-indulgent anger or action, remember God is present, He will help you through that time and bring you out on the other side stronger than you were before.

What would you like to have printed on your tombstone? Maybe we could ask to have written: “God and I, together, made it through this life in the best way we could!“ Think about it!

Pontius Pilate

The consummate politician, the Roman governor chose to preserve his own bloated status by giving the people what they wanted: Jesus’ crucifixion. He washed his hands to signify self-absolution, but bloodied them instead.
