The Messenger – September 2013

From the Pastor’s Desk

“Jesus bids us shine, with clear, pure light,Like a little candle burning in the night; In this world of darkness, we must shine,You in your small corner, and I in mine.       – Tabernacle Hymns, p. 256

This hymn made me remember a first grader saying a program in The Children’s Program at First Church in Hallstead, at the age of fourteen.  He had a lisp and his poem was, This Little Light of Mine.  With his speech pattern, it became Thith Little Light of Mine.  It caused a ripple of laughter every time he said that line in the poem.  But what I remember more than the lisp is that he was so sincere.  He spoke with confidence and seemed to really believe the poem’s message really did apply to him.

I’ve found myself blowing out my own candle more often these days.  So many things have made me angry.  The way people treat people in less than loving ways; the way people in power abuse the privilege of having been put in those positions of power; religions with no compassion for anyone who does not believe as they do are some of the things that cause my light to flicker.

I’m so glad I belong to the family of God, where I can be reminded that not everyone has betrayed the instructions of our Lord and Savior.  My light can shine in my corner if I remember that I will not be judged by what another person did or didn’t do, but I will be judged by what I did or did not do!

I’m responsible for my corner!  I have the task of making sure my light shines, so that anyone who is lost can find there way by seeing God’s light in my corner.  If my corner is dark, it will be one more black space as people travel their life’s journey.

What does your corner look like?  Is it welcoming to those passing by or is it in darkness so that someone must travel on past your corner to one with light?

It seems like there is a lot of darkness today, so it is even more important to let our light shine.  Put a smile on your face, reach out to take someone’s hand, and speak words of encouragement to all that you meet.
