The Messenger – October 2013

From the Pastor’s Desk

“By this time you ought to be teachers yourselves, yet I find you need someone to sit down with you and go over the basics on God again, starting from square one- baby’s milk, when you should have been on solid food long ago! Milk is for beginners, inexperienced in God’s ways, solid food is for the mature, who have some practice in telling right from wrong.”

–    Hebrews 5: 13, 14 (The Message)

I remember when my baby began to cry because his formula did not sustain his need for any length of time.  The Dr. had gone away on vacation and I didn’t know what to do.  The baby cried and I cried!  I sought out another Dr. and he didn’t have a very good bedside manner.  He simply said, in a disgusted voice, “Your baby is hungry.  I suppose you’re one of those schedule mothers who think they know better than their baby when they are hungry!”  I vowed I would never go back to him, but he was our family physician for about 10 years before he retired.  He only told me the truth – Your baby is hungry!

Oh, were it only that simple when we are hungry for the word of God.  Most of the time, we don’t even know that we are.  We seem to be content to let Jesus remain either the tiny baby in the manger or the grown man on the cross.  We don’t even know that we hunger to know those years in between.  Those are the solid foods that we need.  It is in  the study of God’ s word that we digest the solid food that helps us to grow in our relationship with God.

Don’t let your Bible gather dust in some corner; take advantage of the Bible studies at church; listen carefully to the sermons so that you can grow.

And then the scripture says we should be teachers – you should share what you learn.  You don’t have to teach a class or preach a sermon, but only live your life because you NOW KNOW GOD’S WAYS.

You are so fortunate to belong to a Bible teaching church, take advantage and give up the ‘milk’ for something solid.
