The Messenger – September 2017

Dear Church Family,

September is upon us and as we celebrate Labor Day, we remember the economic and social
contributions of workers to the strength, prosperity and well being of this country.
This may also be a good time to celebrate God, and renew or resolve in what we believe for
He has given us strength, prosperity, and by the grace of Christ, taken care of our eternal well being.
In Daniel 1: 12,13 we read, “Please test your servants for 10 days: Give us nothing but
vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then compare our appearance with that of the young
men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.”
Times were testy in Babylon. The king determined that the way to the hearts of the captive
Israel was through their youth. Win them over to your ways, assimilate them into your
culture, and they’d never turn against you. So he chose the cream of the crop of the young
Jewish men to indoctrinate.
Daniel, wise beyond his teens, understood the ploy of the king so he took a stand. Although
he could have dined on the royal food, he requested nothing but vegetables, fruits, and grains
to eat, and water to drink instead of wine.
The king’s food would not have been prepared according to Jewish dietary laws. Give into the
king on this point, and what would happen to the rest of your heritage? If you’re going to resist
assimilation into a culture, you need to do what you can to be true to your roots. As to the
wine while not prohibited by Jewish law, imagine how easily a king could lull a group of
young men into complacency by keeping them slightly inebriated.
At the end of the 10 days the appearance of the young men on Daniel’s diet was noticeable
better than the ones eating the royal food. Daniel and his friends influenced the king’s ideals
rather than the other way around.
So how is this relevant to you and me today, aside from the fact that most of us need a better
diet? We live in a strange culture, in danger of being sucked into its depths. Our only way to
remain pure is to take a stand for the things that please God.

Dare to be a Daniel!

In His Service,
Pastor Joe

August has been a trying time in western Kenya for Rev. Silvanus Malaho and his large family. They have had national elections, which have become physical. Prices of basic necessities have inflated nearly 100%. Weather has changed to Malaria season. Three of the children who stay with him,(orphans) were hospitalized. One child, Melissa, has died when Malaria changed to Pneumonia. Now they also have hospital expenses and funeral expenses to deal with. Two of our members, provided extra funds so the hospital could release the body for burial. They provided a decent Christian burial for Melissa. Her playmates are missing her presence.  School is scheduled to start for them on Sept. 4. Now they need supplies to open the school, which we helped to build with our funds. Rev. Malaho is always very gracious with his THANK YOUs. Everything is always much appreciated. He always offers prayers for us and requests our prayers for his family.
